Healthy Snacks Guidance
State and Local Wellness Policies

These are the standards for foods and beverages served set by the State Legislature and
Lexington School District Three’s Wellness Policy.


Fat Content

Primary/Elementary – No more than 30%, less than 10% from Saturated Fat,  no more than 1% of calories from trans fatty acids

Middle/High –  2006 – 2007 at 40%; 2007 – 2008 at 35%; 2008 – 2009 at 30% 

Sugar Content

 K – 5 – 35% by weight

 (Note: Nuts, seeds, and some cheeses are exceptions. Although more than 30% of calories come from fat, these foods are considered appropriate and nutritious snacks when served in small portions.

Beverages

 K – 12th grade –  2%, 1% and fat-free milk, water

K – 5th grade – 100% fruit or vegetable juice that contain no added sugar or sweeteners

6th –12th  – Juice and vegetable – 2006 – 2007 at 3%; 2007 – 2008 at 10%; 2008 – 2009 at 20% (Sports drinks and Tea not included)

 

Cup Cake Clause- Local Policy

 

4 days are exempt from the Wellness Policy requirement to only serve foods

and beverages of minimal nutritional value. These are: 2 in the Fall and

2 in the Spring which include Christmas, Easter, the last day of

school, and one teacher’s choice.

you have an item you would like to use that is not listed.

·        General Mills Oat and Honey Granola Bars

·        Quaker Oats Chewy Granola

·        Snackwell’s Chocolate Crème Sandwich Crackers

·        Famous Amos Lowfat Ginger Snaps

·        Famous Amos Lowfat Lemon Snaps

·        Fat Free Fig Newtons

·        Gardetto Reduced Fat Snack-Ems

·        Gardetto Low Fat Mustard Flavor Pretzel Mix

·        Austin Zoo Animal Crackers

·        Kellogg’s Rice Krispie Treat Squares

Bagels/ Muffins
 

·        Otis Spunkmeyer Thaw and Serve Bagel 3 ounce

·        Blueberry

·        Cinnamon Raisin

·        Onion

·        Plain

·        Otis Spunkmeyer Low Fat Muffins 2.25 ounce

·        Apple Cinnamon

·        Banana Nut

·        Wild Berry

·        Chocolate Chocolate Chip

·        Otis Spunkmeyer Delicious Essential Muffins 1.8 ounce

·        Blueberry

·        Banana

·        Chocolate Chocolate Chip

·        Apple Cinnamon

·        Strawberry Starbar Breakfast Bar 1.3 ounce

·        Apple Cinnamon Starbar Breakfast Bar 1.3 ounce

·        Cookies –  no larger than 2 ounces

 

 Foods Low in Saturated Fat

 

·        Canned Fruit- (in light syrup or natural juices)

·        Fresh Fruit ( e.g. apples, oranges

·        Fresh Vegetables ( e.g. carrots)

·        Fruit Juice and Vegetable Juice

·        Low-Fat crackers and cookies, such as fig bars and gingersnaps

·        Pretzels

·        Bread Products (e.g. bread sticks, roll, bagel and pita bread)

·        Ready to eat low sugar cereal

·        Granola bars made with unsaturated fat

·        Low-fat or nonfat yogurt

·        Snack mixes of cereal and dried fruit with nuts and seeds

·        Peanut butter and low fat crackers

·        Ice cream products- ( not to exceed 4 oz)

·        Pop Corn air popped

·        Chips –  baked

 
Other Ideas

·        Fruit and veggie trays w/low fat dip

·        Ham, cheese w/ turkey sandwiches or wraps w/ low fat condiments.

·        Fruit Smoothies ( blueberry, pineapple, berries)

·        Yogurt and fruit topped w/ cereal, granola or graham crackers

·        Whole grain crackers w/cheese cubes or string cheese

·        Pizza w/low fat toppings ( vegetable, lean ham Canadian bacon)

·        Low fat or sugar free puddings

·        Low fat tortilla chips w/ salsa
