Federal, State, and Local Wellness Policies
How They Relate to Child Nutrition
Federal
All schools that participate in the National School Lunch and National School Breakfast Programs are mandated to have a local Wellness Policy as of July, 2006 to address all aspects of the schools relating to foods and nutrition.
State
Act 102, the Student Health and Fitness Act of 2005, sets requirements for nutrition and physical activity for grades K-5 for all public schools in South Carolina.
Local
Lexington School District Three School Board adopted a Wellness Policy in September of 2006. This policy addresses requirements for Nutrition Education, Physical Activity, and Nutrition Standards. These standards provide guidance for grades K-12. The Wellness Policy goals are to be considered in planning all school based activities including school events, field trips, dances and assemblies.
